The real variegated milk thistle (lat. Silybum marianum) is a plant valued for its health-enhancing properties already in the Middle Ages. Legend has it that its Latin name comes from the Virgin Mary, who spilled a drop of milk while feeding the baby. These fell on the leaves of milkweed growing nearby and thus the characteristic white spots formed on the leaves of the plant. Milk thistle belongs to the Asteraceae family and is native to the Mediterranean region. Originally, milk thistle grew in southern and southeastern Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. However, it quickly spread to other countries of the world. Where does it come from now? Outside its original range, it grows wild in Africa, Europe, Australia, North and South America. In Poland, milk thistle is grown mainly in the central and northern parts of the country. It belongs to a group of plants that have passed from the wild to cultivation in the field.
